On Thursday, I mustered my courage and marched to the end of Rock Street. I would use my left-behind sketchbook as an excuse to see if Birdman had meant what he’d said about us being finished.

Probably he will apologize, I told myself as I walked. Probably he would explain that he wasn’t himself. The trip to Chicago had been a strain. He would ruffle my hair, call me his little potato, and together we would paint over the black.

But standing in front of the empty pedestal, my pep talk sounded hollow. Something had happened in Chicago, something with his little bird, and I had made it worse.

If this was a glimpse of the tortured-artist life, I didn’t want it. Some hard things were too hard.

I turned and went home.
